About Knee Joint Injections

Local corticosteroid injection and aspiration of joint effusions are quick and easy interventions within the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice that can provide significant relief from pain associated with acute exacerbations of knee osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudo gout, knee pain and strain. Vesna has been performing knee joint injections for clients in primary care for 7 years. This course provides Nurse Practitioners with an affordable, hands-on educational opportunity to learn all of the skills necessary to safely and independently perform knee joint injections in their practice.

 

Course Objectives

Successful completion of this course will enable the participant to:

1. Review anatomy and physiology of the knee
2. Review the current clinical management for patients presenting with knee joint effusion, known osteoarthritis, gout/pseudo gout and knee pain/sprain for the purposes of providing appropriate interventions in primary care
3. Provide patient education and recommendations for local corticosteroid injections in primary care
4. Demonstrate techniques for knee joint injections in a primary care setting
5. Perform fluid collection techniques and understand the interpretation of fluid analysis
6. Describe appropriate follow-up recommendations and care after knee joint injections

Small group, student-centered learning environment
Hands-on injection and aspiration with an orthopedic knee injection model

The course will run from 1:30pm until 3:30pm
